Fresh corn on off !
For many of us summer has long gone already. Still, nature continues at his normal pace and that why what has been planted in spring, is now available on our markets. We are talking about nicely fresh corn from our own fields (corn originally came from Mexico). Corn can be served amongst others with some letuce, or even your barbecue gets an exotic touch, adding flavour and colour at the same time.For only € 3,00 you get no less than 10 (ten) cobs!
Originally, corn was a basic ingredient in the South-American kitchen. It was Christoffel Columbus who imported this plant, a derivative of grass, via Spain into our countries in 1492.
Corn contains a lot of potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and vitamine B1 (folic acid). Corn is quite frequently used for feeding cattle, but also in our own kitchen it is a healthy and tastful ingredient.
Sugar corn, as it is also being called, can be cooked, grilled, roasted, etc. You can prepare the grains separately or simply prepare the entire cob. You just tear off the external leaves, leaving some for protection and to keep them warm once cooked. Just put the cobs in a pan with some 2 cm of water and cook them without adding anything, and certainly no salt because this makes the grain tougher to eat. Cover them with a lid and let them cook for some 30 minutes. Once cooked, you can give them an extra nice golden colour by putting them on the BBQ for a couple of minutes. Enjoy!
