History
There
is a large covered hall (built in 1890) above the Cellars. Metal construction
was introduced into architecture from 1835, especially after the 1850
World Exhibition in London. The market is a perfect square with a
surface area of no less than 10,000 m2.
The
Cellars are completely hidden from the view of passers-by but are
impressively large. Because the subsoil is marshy, they first made
sure of solid foundations when the covered hall was built. There are
cellars under the entire surface area. Majestic arched vaulting supports
the edifice above. Below ground, this presents a splendid alternation
of arches and pillars.
This
underground space housed a mushroom farm for a certain period in the
fifties. Subsequently then came problems around the continued operation
of the slaughterhouse and the market, as well as the construction
of the metro. In 1983, there was a threat that the covered hall might
disappear. So the Royal Commission of Monuments and Parks judged the
moment had come to apply for the building to be classified because
it is one of the most striking examples of the use of metal in Belgium.
The
covered cattle market was classified by Royal Decree on 8 August 1988.
Heavy investments have been made since 1992 in renovating the Cellars. An investment of € 2.478.000 was needed for the premises to be used as a reception and banqueting venue.
